SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department and several other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies throughout Chatham County will pay tribute to the officers from our community who were killed in the line of duty on Monday.

The Police Memorial Day service will take place at 10 a.m. at the Police Officer Memorial Statue in the median of Oglethorpe Avenue across from SCMPD Headquarters.

Fifty-one officers from Chatham County have been killed in the line of duty since 1868. The most recent was in 1999 when a Tybee Island Police officer was killed during a traffic pursuit.

So far in 2014, 42 law enforcement officers across the United States have been killed in the line of duty.
