BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham's mayor is taking a trip to Normandy, France.

William Bell was invited by President Barack Obama to represent Birmingham during an event for the 70th anniversary of D-Day. That event happens Friday.

Bell says it's an honor to be invited and a reminder to all of us that freedom is never free. He also says the trip is especially significant because his father served in World War II and survived the Battle of Normandy.
