BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham fire crews responded to a loft fire late Thursday night at the Phoenix loft apartments on 2nd Avenue North.

The call came out before 11 p.m. Birmingham fire responded and had the fire out in 10 minutes. All residents got out safely and there are no reports of injury.

The man who lived in the apartment where the fire started filed a report with police. Investigators say they may be looking at his girlfriend as a suspect.

The man told police he left his loft with his girlfriend still inside. When he came back, his girlfriend was there with a fire on her hands, according to Lt. Sean Edwards with BPD.

A man who lives just two apartments over from where the fire started says he saw the flames and smoke coming from the unit. He says water damage is the main issue for Friday morning.

The first, second and third floors received the brunt of the damage, with water seeping through many of the lofts.

Fire investigators have not indicated how that fire started.
