Birmingham city leaders are making a run at hosting the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Six cities have submitted applications: Birmingham, Cleveland, Columbus, New York, Philadelphia, and Phoenix.
The bids will now be evaluated by the Democrats' technical advisory committee. That process will include on-site visits and other inquiries.
"Hosting a party convention is a true honor and we're thrilled with all the fantastic options that we have going into the next cycle," Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz. "We look forward to evaluating these bids and selecting a city to host this special gathering of Democrats."
A final decision is expected late 2014 or early 2015.
