Tighter security at the Lauderdale County Detention Center is up for discussion with the county commission.
The jail administrator asked the commission for funding to add a new mechanism to cell locks. Jackie Keenum said the locks haven't been replaced in 19 years and would like to update their security measures to protect everyone in and out of the facility.
"It is a piece of equipment," said Keenum. "It's not just really a lock. They have lights on them that indicate if the door or lock itself is open or secure, which is good. You can see it from one end of the hall to the other. It would alert the officer immediately if something happened if door was accidentally left open, jimmied open, or whatever."
The new locks aren't cheap. They cost about $2,200 each. Keenum is proposing changing them in phases.
