MANAUS, BRAZIL (FOX) - World Cup fever is in full swing, and it gets even hotter in the middle of the Amazon rainforest where the U.S. team plays Portugal on Sunday.

The Amazon River's biggest city with 2 million people, Manaus will become home to the first World Cup game played in a tropical rainforest.

The only way to get there is by boat or plane, and Americans have flocked to cheer Team USA and get a taste of the local culture.

"We are about to go on tour," said Timothy Dyer, a fan from Connecticut. "It's three days, two nights. We're sleeping in hammocks with mosquito nets."

Above-water village communities survive on the currents of the Rio Negro and Amazon rivers.

Though it is a metropolitan area, its roots really lie with the indigenous population that call the rainforest home.

The traditional cuisine is sea-based. Turtle is the dish of choice; fried stingray and alligator are also favorites.

The most-popular meal in Manaus is tacaca. It is a soup made from a broth of manioc, a Brazilian root, and paired with shrimp and jambu.
