East Texas 'CODE' agents executed two sting operations at local motels in Longview, where arrests were made and drugs were seized.
Working on a narcotics tip that drugs were being sold from a motel, CODE agents first raided a room at the Globe Inn on Marshall avenue on Thursday. Inside, they found 55-year-old David Gross and 46-year-old Mary Ellen Brown in possession of methamphetamine. Brown also possessed morphine, and even had another pill when booked in.
The motel tactic is one police have seen before.
"They'll deal out of and do it mostly up on the interstate and down around 80. Those people stay there for months at a time," says Longview police officer Kristie Brian.
Another tip about meth sales brought agents to a room at the American Dream Inn on Highway 80. Agents found 55-year-old Phyllis Pruitt and 32-year-old Andrea Woodruff in possession of methamphetamine and baggies.
Investigators say that a hotel or motel can very often provide a quiet unassuming haven for those who sell or manufacture drugs. Since there is no scrutiny about guests, these operations can conduct business behind closed doors.
"They'll go from room to room, hop back and forth. Nobody calls it in or pays attention," says Brian. Police just don't get enough tips.
"We've tried to address it. If we get a tip, we'll go out and deal with it," Brian says.
All those arrested were charged with possession of a controlled substance. Gross and Pruitt have been released from jail after posting bond.
