TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

Fixing the shortest of two runways at Tuscaloosa Regional Airport won't come cheap. The price tag could be as much as $1 million.

Repairs need to be made so the airport can keep the designation that allows it accept commercial flights.

Tera Tubbs, director of the Tuscaloosa Department of Transportation described what kind of work is needed.

"Due to the condition of the pavement, we're not going to be able to go out and blast off the striping without messing up the pavement. What that has lead to is we're going to mill off the pavement and then restripe the runway," Tubbs explained.

Money for the project could come from a yet-to-be approved bond deal and the proceeds from a tract land from Tuscaloosa bought by the city of Vance.

The Federal Aviation Associations has given Tuscaloosa a deadline of December 31 to complete the repairs.
