GARDENDALE, AL (WBRC) -

The Gardnedale Board of Education welcomed the new system's first superintendent, Dr. Patrick Martin, at a special reception July 1.

Martin was officially hired June 24 in a unanimous vote. Martin was previously the superintendent for a district in Illinois.

Voters approved a property tax increase in November 2013 in order to form an independent Gardendale City Schools system.

The first school year is expected to begin in fall 2015.

Dr. Chuck Ledbetter, Superintendent of Dublin, Georgia City Schools; Dr. Tim Wilder, Dothan City Schools Superintendent; and Dr. Michael Daria, Tuscaloosa City Schools Assistant Superintendent, also interviewed for the position.
