AAA of Alabama hopes to save lives this Fourth of July by offering its Tow For life program. It's their fourth year doing so.
"It's just a free towing program for anyone who might have had too much to drink and shouldn't be behind the wheel," says AAA spokesperson Clay Ingram.
"They call a toll free number, 1-800-AAA-HELP, they'll ask you your name and location. We come and get you and your vehicle and get you home safely," said Ingram.
The ride is free for the first ten miles. Beyond that, there's a small charge.
"We do it to raise awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving and encourage people to plan ahead before they go out because waiting until after you've been drinking is not the time to make that decision," Ingram said.
United Towing is one company participating in the program.
"It's gratifying, first off, knowing we get an opportunity to help the city and help the people save lives," said owner Gary Douglas.
He says the response has fluctuated over the last four years, mostly on the low side, despite the fact publicity's out there.
"I say call us," Douglas urges. "I mean, there's no better price than free. What more could you ask for? A free tow, we save your life and no DUI."
