COTTONDALE, AL (WBRC) -

Members of the Cottondale VFW Post 6022 fired up their grill for the largest fundraising opportunity of the year. It was also a great chance for veterans to socialize on Independence Day.

Ribs cooking on smokers at Cottondale's VFW Post 6022 sustain more than folks with appetites.

"Everything was lovely back then, they've been having a hard time here lately and anyone that's listening, we need help," said Joe Gray.

Gray is an Army veteran and VFW member since 1979. He said people buying barbecue at today's Fourth of July fundraiser will help maintain the post and continue its mission of public service. The money from slabs of ribs and rib plates help pay for plenty.

Walter Turner says the fundraiser also supports their scholarship and community service programs, among other needs.

"We've got kind of an aging building here and we just need to make the building repairs. We try to raise money any way we can. Barbecues are really good and fish fries are really good. But barbecue seems to bring out everybody for the Fourth of July," Turner said.

Volunteers started cooking 90 racks of St. Louis style spare ribs around 5 a.m. Friday morning. Thomas Lancaster helps out by cooking at the Post at least once a month.

"It's mostly a lot of luck. But it's also a lot of love. Take your time and cook it slow," said Lancaster.

Turner believes it's a great way to bring in more than people who served the country in the military.

"Just to bring the community out and visit the post members, let them visit the veterans and their families and let them see what we're all about and thank them for their service and shake their hand and get some great barbecue while they're at it," Turner said.
