SCOTT COUNTY, IA (WQAD/CNN) – A cancer patient, who wasn’t allowed to testify about his medical condition, was found guilty of drug charged in Iowa on Wednesday.

Benton Mackenzie claimed he grew the marijuana for medicinal purposes.

But a judge ruled he wasn’t allowed to mention that during his trial.

Mackenzie, his wife and son were all found guilty on a variety of drug charges.

Sentencing was set for August.

Investigators seized 71 marijuana plants from Mackenzie in May 2013.
