ASHDOD, ISRAEL (CHANNEL 2/CNN) - A rocket fired from Gaza detonated a large fire at a gas station in Ashdod early on Friday.

Thick black smoke rose above the scene, several cars were charred by orange flames and at least one person was reportedly injured.

The Israeli Defense Force tweeted that another rocket in the same barrage that caused "massive damage" at the gas station was intercepted by Iron Dome, Israel’s anti-rocket defense system.

The IDF also tweeted that since the beginning of operation Protective Edge on Monday, 548 rockets have been fired at Israel.

Of them, 118 have been intercepted by Iron Dome.

Israel is carrying out airstrikes against militant Palestinian group Hamas, which controls Gaza.

The military action is aimed at hurting Hamas and ending rocket attacks against Israel.
