(CNN) - Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and undocumented immigrant Jose Antonio Vargas was detained by U.S. Border Patrol agents as he tried to fly out of Texas on Tuesday.

He was handcuffed while attempting to pass through security at McAllen-Miller International Airport.

Vargas wrote and directed Documented, a CNN documentary about the U.S. immigration debate and his life story that aired June 29.

Earlier in the day, Vargas tweeted that he was about to go through security and took a photo of his only identification: a Philippine passport, along with the copy of the U.S. Constitution.

Minutes later, a photo of his arrest was posted on Twitter.

Vargas' spokesman told CNN he was taken to a detention center at the airport.
