MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

If you're a smoker, you'll soon have one less place in Montgomery to light-up a cigarette. Friday, Huntingdon College announced it is now a smoke-free campus.

The policy started August 1 but came about following the passage of an SGA bill last spring that deemed all college-owned property - both on and off campus - to be free from tobacco. The ban includes all forms of smoking tobacco such as cigarettes, cigars, pipes, hookahs and e-cigarettes.

Signs are being added to areas around campus advising students and employees of the policy.

"The HC is Smoke-Free initiative is just one measure by which Huntingdon can continue to promote healthy living and learning in mind, body and spirit, in addition to offering healthy food selections in the dining hall, facilities for exercise and wellness, a breadth of spiritual life programs, and an educational environment conducive to learning," said spokeswoman Su Ofe.

The Centers for Disease Control says smoking is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, claiming the lives of 443,000 every year.
