School leaders and police in Elmore County want to know who's behind some anonymous and harassing text messages.
Some students and teachers at Elmore County High School are getting the messages, and the sender is concealing his or her identity.
"It's far from funny. You sit down and you talk to the parents and see the students and see the hurt on their faces. Nothing about it is funny," said Principal Wes Rogers.
Rogers says the harmful text messages have been going on for more than two years now. Although he couldn't tell us exactly what the messages say, he did say the messages convey the sender wants the person to be hurt.
"It's extremely disturbing. You see a faculty member, you see your student body that wants to come to school and mind their own business. They don't want to have to deal with this," said Rogers. "They pick up the phone walking down the hallway going from class to class and they see something like this. They are at home resting with their family, out to eat, or watching a movie and they get a text that is harassing and cruel. It's gone way too far. It needs to stop."
The Eclectic Police Department is now investigating the texts.
What makes it even more difficult is the person or people sending the messages are using an app that blocks the actual cell number and provides a fake number instead.
Although it may take more time, police say they will find out who is behind this.
"Everything is traceable. It doesn't matter if you go through third party, eventually all IP addresses are saved by law. We can find out. You can't stay hidden," Sgt. Ron Wilhoit said.
Rogers adds the school will also hold the sender(s) accountable, "from the legal stand point and also from the school standpoint. We have policies in our student handbook that deal with this."
Police warn the people behind the texts not only face issues with the school system but could look at both civil and criminal courts. They could face multiple charges including harassing communications, as well as, federal charges due to using the internet.
If you know anything about these text messages you are urged to call Elmore county school leadership, Eclectic police or Crimestoppers at 334-215-STOP.
