Jennings takes early edge in LSU QB battle

BATON ROUGE, LA (WVUE) -

Les Miles was true to his word with both quarterbacks playing Saturday against Wisconsin, but true freshman Brandon Harris saw just one series, three snaps that did not go so well.

Meanwhile, sophomore Anthony Jennings had his share of ups and downs, but in the end, Miles said it was Jennings who gave his Tigers the best chance to win. Jennings finished 9-21 for 239 yards passing and two touchdowns.

"The quarterback in my opinion functioned the offense, did the things that he was supposed to do," coach Les Miles said. "Hit the passes he was supposed to hit, threw it away when he was supposed to throw it away. If he continues to play like that, I think we will have a certain level of excellence at that spot. I think Brandon Harris is coming, we're not going to predetermine a lack of playing time for him, we're going to continue to bring him on, but it was obvious in that game that the opportunity for us to win certainly right now is to get Anthony Jennings comfortable in there and let him play."

Sophomore receiver Travin Dural added, "As you can see, they did put Brandin in, so we may do a two-quarterback system, I'm not sure how that's going to work."

Freshman wideout John Diarse says both quarterbacks will continue to play, "Like I said, anything can happen, and I look for Brandin to do the same things that Anthony did or even better. We expect great things out of both guys, I think we'll get that."

So expect Anthony Jennings to get his second straight start this Saturday against Sam Houston State in LSU's home opener, but look for the freshman Harris to see extended playing time in Death Valley.
